Construction of 42” Dia Indus River Crossing through Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) upstream of Kotri Barrage, Jamshoro

Sui Southe Gas Company (SSGC) has undertaken the construction of 42” Dia Indus River Crossing through Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) upstream of Kotri Barrage, Jamshoro, Sindh Province, Pakistan.

China Petroleum Pipeline Bureau (CPP) are the EPC Contractors for the project.

The Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) has experienced phenomenal growth during the past two decades. This growth has been driven by the benefits to utility owners (such as the elimination of traffic disruption and minimal environmental damage).

In this project, 42” dia gas pipeline will pass about 25 – 30m below the river bed.

The investigation program consisted of drilling a total of 30 boreholes with depth varying from 40 – 50m on both sides of the river. Six boreholes were drilled underwater in the river channel. The underwater boreholes were drilled from a floating platform that comprised a pontoon fabricated with steel drums and frame.

Geophysical tests were also performed. These comprised electrical resistivity and shear wave velocity (seismic downhole) tests.
